The artwork known as “Last Judgment” was created by the artist Giotto in 1306. This fresco, measuring 1000 by 840 centimeters, is a prominent piece of the Proto Renaissance art movement. It is of the genre of religious painting and is located in the Scrovegni (Arena) Chapel in Padua, Italy.
The fresco depicts the solemn scene of the Last Judgment, where Christ, enthroned and surrounded by a radiant mandorla, presides over the eternal destinies of humankind. On either side of Christ, angels blow their trumpets, summoning the dead to rise from their graves. To Christ’s right, the blessed ascend to heaven, passing through the organized rows of saints, bishops, martyrs, and the Virgin Mary. On the left, the damned are hurled into the chaotic inferno, surrounded by demons and grotesque torture scenes. The fresco’s composition is characterized by its vivid colors, detailed figures, and dramatic contrasts, exemplifying Giotto’s innovative approach to spatial depth and human emotion in religious art. The overall imagery reinforces the themes of divine justice and the moral order of the universe.
