About Mont Sainte-Victoire

Mont Sainte-Victoire, a limestone mountain located in southern France, holds great significance for the region and its artists. Among them is Paul Cézanne, who had a close relationship with this landscape since childhood. Obsessed with capturing the essence of Mont Sainte-Victoire, Cézanne created 36 paintings and 45 watercolors of the mountain until his death. The recurring subject allowed him to experiment with color and composition, resulting in some of his most iconic works.

Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire paintings are characterized by their use of contrasting colors to convey a sense of expanse and breadth. This technique creates a sense of depth that draws viewers into the scene further. Japanese prints inspired Cézanne’s style in these works: he admired their use of color and flatness as well as their ability to capture an entire landscape within one frame.
