The artwork, titled “Saint George with scenes from his life,” is a Middle Byzantine icon created circa 1025 to circa 1075 in the Komnenian style (1081-1185) by Orthodox Icons. The piece, measuring 107 by 82 cm, is part of the Saints series and is housed at the National Art Museum of Ukraine (NAMU) in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The artwork depicts Saint George, a revered Christian martyr and soldier, in the center, adorned in military attire. The vivid details of his armor and the faint outlines of a halo reflect the sanctity attributed to him. Surrounding the larger central figure are several smaller scenes depicting pivotal moments from Saint George’s life and exploits. The icon exhibits the traditional Byzantine stylization with its use of gold leaf and rich, yet now faded, pigments. The wood surface bears signs of age, with visible cracks and flaking, which adds historical authenticity and character to the piece. Each smaller scene encapsulates episodes of courage and divine intervention, integral to the hagiography of Saint George, emphasizing the devotional and narrative intent behind this religious artwork.
