About The Annunciation

The Annunciation by Jan van Eyck is an incredible oil painting from the Early Netherlandish period. The artwork shows an angel and a young woman in what appears to be a place of worship. The painting was originally done on panel, though it has since been transferred to canvas. This masterpiece can now be viewed in the National Gallery of Art, in Washington D.C. It is interesting to note that this piece was part of the left inner wing of a triptych.

Jan van Eyck’s Annunciation is a captivating example of Early Netherlandish artistry, showing how sophisticated the period was both artistically and religiously. It serves as a reminder that there are many incredible works from this period that still survive today, allowing us to appreciate them centuries later. Another noteworthy artwork from van Eyck is his painting St Francis Receiving The Stigmata which depicts Francis’s religious experience during his time with Stefano di Ripa Grande.
