Luca Signorelli, a renowned painter of the Italian Renaissance from Cortona in Tuscany, created one of his masterpieces, The Holy Family. This painting represents the pinnacle of Signorelli’s career and marks the achievement of his artistic maturity. This tondo format painting was commissioned for Sala delle Udienze in Florence, which is part of Capitani di Parte Guelfa.
Apart from being a brilliant artist, Vasari claimed to be a distant relative of Signorelli and wrote an impressive biography on him. He trained under Piero della Francesca and started making art early on; unfortunately, only a badly deteriorated fresco depicting the Virgin and saints remains as proof. However, he’s most famous for creating massive frescos such as the Last Judgment located at Orvieto Cathedral.
