“Three Gems,” created by James Turrell in 2005, is an installation artwork that is part of the Skyspaces series. This piece is associated with the art movements of Light and Space as well as Environmental (Land) Art.
The artwork features a dome-like structure with a large archway. The dome’s exterior has a smooth, softly shaded surface transitioning from a muted violet to a light blue as it reaches the sky. Inside the arch, the walls display varying shades of blue, giving an immersive experience which interacts harmoniously with natural light. This piece, as typical of Turrell’s Skyspaces series, invites viewers to contemplate the sky and the interplay of light within an architectural frame, creating a profound meditative space.
