About Untitled (Bebe Marie)

Joseph Cornell, an American artist and filmmaker, created a unique art piece in the early 1940s titled Untitled (Bebe Marie). This artwork is essentially a papered and painted wood box that contains a Victorian doll in a cloth dress and a straw hat with cloth flowers, dried flowers, and twigs. Cornell found this doll in his relative’s attic in Nyack, New York.

Cornell was known for being an exponent of assemblage art movement, which was inspired by the surrealism movement. He created works that were complex and diverse while showcasing originality and craftsmanship. In Untitled (Bebe Marie), he arranged the doll in silver-painted twigs to simulate a forest environment.

The artwork displays meticulous attention to detail in creating an immersive fairy-tale-like experience. The integration of mixed media elements with the doll makes it even more compelling. Overall, Joseph Cornell’s talent is evident in his ability to create imaginative pieces such as Untitled (Bebe Marie), which has become widely celebrated across artistic spheres.
