“Untitled (Coffee)”, created by Jannis Kounellis in 1991, is an artwork that belongs to the Post-Minimalism movement and falls within the installation genre.
The artwork features a collection of coffee beans enclosed in a rectangular frame made of gray metallic material. Dominating the lower portion of the composition, the coffee beans create a densely textured mat, their varying shades of brown lending a monochromatic depth to the lower half. Above the beans, a blank expanse of pale, smooth surface contrasts sharply with the rich texture below. Extending from the upper region is a piece of fabric or possibly paper, intersecting with thin, dark lines that stretch diagonally towards the bulk of the coffee beans, introducing an element of tension. The overall effect of the installation is both industrial and organic, inviting contemplation through its juxtaposition of everyday materials presented in a minimalist fashion.
