What is Embossing?
Embossing is a crafting technique that consists of adding textured designs to paper or other materials by using dies or embossing folders, and an embossing machine.
The process involves using metallic dies or embossing folders on top or below the paper or cardstock and applying pressure so the portion of the paper that is pressed against the die raises or sinks slightly, creating a beautiful non-printed or inked design.
Embossing can be used to add a certain design to the paper or to give an uniform texture to all of it, for the first option you’ll need a metallic die with the desired design, for the second, you’ll need an embossing folder the size of your paper.
What are Embossing Dies and Folders?
Embossing folders are plastic folders with a specific design etched into them, they come in two parts, the top side of the folder with the raised design and the other side with the “negative” indented design. When the paper is pressed between them it creates an embossed design on one side and the corresponding “debossed” design on the other side.
Embossing dies are metallic dies that are made for embossing, embossing machines usually include among their accessories a rubber pad which doesn’t apply the same amount of pressure as the cutting plates that can be used for embossing.
With the proper technique pretty much any cutting die can be used for embossing. Sometimes the rubber pad limits the amount of dies we can use for embossing since some of them still cut through the paper or cardstock, however you can change the rubber pad for other thinner and more flexible pads, use thicker paper, or even use use the “wet” technique that consists on lightly spraying some water onto the paper which makes it more flexible and easier to emboss.
Key Features to Consider When Choosing an Embossing Machine
Machine Type
We have three main types of embossing machines, however only two of them are for “proper” embossing:
- Manual Machines: Here we have machines like the Sizzix Big Shot, the Spellbinders PLatinum and the (discontinued) Cricut Cuttlebug. These machines work with pure strength, by moving the crank handle which allows the two-roller system to press together the famous “sandwich” (Cutting plate, rubber pad, paper, die/embossing folder, cutting plate) making possible embossing in a few seconds.
- Electric Machines: Electric machines have pretty much the same two-roller system, but powered by electricity instead. This makes the process easier for those who have pain on their hands, fingers or wrists. Some electric machines have a special button that allows you to reverse-feed the sandwich, which is great for those intricate dies and designs that need a second or even third pass.
- Electronic Machines: Here we have machines like Cricut, Silhouette and Brother ScanNCut, which can “emboss” and “deboss” with the proper tools, but involves a longer and much more complex process, and honestly takes quite a while. The only pros are that you’re not limited by dies or embossing folders and you can use any design you like. Plus, they’re great for many other things like cutting, drawing, engraving, etc.
Size and Portability
The size of your cutting machine is important not only for your workspace organization but for the size of the projects you plan to make. Cutting machines come with different feeding slots sizes that go from 2.5 inches to up to 13 inches long.
If you’re just starting, we recommend a smaller machine, from 4 to 6 inches, if you’re planning on making cards or working on bigger projects, 8 to 9-inch machines will suit your needs the best, however if you plan on working on large projects and need other features, we recommend large machines like Cricut or Silhouette.
For those who dictate classes, attend workshops or conventions, how portable your machine is will define their experience on a different level. If this is your case go for foldable machines that are easy to carry and store like the Spellbinders Platinum or the Sizzix Big Shot Foldaway.
Accessory Compatibility
Some embossing machines only accept dies, cutting plates and embossing folders from certain brands. Be it the size, thickness or type, this can be pretty limiting, especially given the included accessories won’t last forever or that you might need larger or thinner folders, rubber pads, plastic or metallic shims, etc.
We recommend you to get an embossing machine that is compatible with different brands and third-party accessories.
When talking of electronic machines, do know that you’ll need to purchase the embossing and debossing accessories separately, which adds to the already expensive price.
Price
Embossing machines are not very cheap, and although you can find some affordable alternatives in the market, generally, they tend to perform badly or not last very long. We recommend you to go for trusted brands like Sizzix, Spellbinders and Gemini, which have proven to be made with quality materials and are very durable, lasting more than 10 years in some cases.
