About Madonna with saints

Giovanni Bellini’s San Zaccaria Altarpiece, also known as Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints, is a classic example of his naturalistic depiction of light. Completed in 1505 for the Procuratia di Ultra, it currently resides in the church of San Zaccaria in Venice.

The painting features a central Madonna and Child surrounded by six saints arranged in two rows. The figures are depicted with incredible detail and depth thanks to Bellini’s use of clear, slow-drying oil paints that allowed him to create rich tints and detailed shadings.

Bellini was a leading Venetian artist during his time known for creating works on devotional themes primarily intended for Venice. In addition to the San Zaccaria Altarpiece, another famous artwork by Bellini featuring Madonna and Child with Saints was created in late 1480s. His masterful use of light earned him great fame during his lifetime, inspiring many artists that followed.

Overall, Giovanni Bellini’s San Zaccaria Altarpiece is an exceptional example of his skill as an artist when it comes to painting religious subjects. The intricate details featured on this piece reveal its importance to Venetian culture at that time.
