About Morning Sun

Morning Sun is a painting by American artist Edward Hopper, completed in 1952. The painting features Hopper’s wife Jo sitting in a white slip on a bed, facing an open window. Hopper was known for depicting everyday life in the US, often depicting industrialized urban landscapes and alienated people.

Morning Sun is part of Hopper’s “Window” series and portrays human isolation in the modern city. Jo appears lost in thought and isolated in the painting. This theme of loneliness reflected many of Hopper’s other works as well.

Light plays a central role in Morning Sun, with an emphasis on shadows cast across the white walls and floor. As with much of his work, the aesthetic key is “horizontality,” highlighting how buildings cut into them from above and below.

Morning Sun has been described as one of the ultimate images of summer due to its depiction of sunlight streaming through an open window onto Jo’s skin while she gaze out to unknown lands outside her room.
